Biography
Miranda McCarthy started London Bird as a self-taught accessories designer creating haute-couture pieces for the catwalk. Her award-winning statement costume jewellery was first showcased by InStyle magazine in 2004 and she quickly gained recognition as talent on the cutting edge. A fashion director’s favorite, London Bird continued to collaborate with the press on notable fashion projects including a catwalk show with the English National Ballet, showcasing London Birds Winter 05/06 collection of leather, knitwear, and silk accessories.
Five years on London Bird Ltd. was formed, in 2009, when Miranda created her first luxury line of fine jewellery . London Bird's silver and goldsmiths are pioneering techniques to produce ground breaking, light weight, large scale pieces - the next era in modern jewellery design. Whilst retaining their huge impact every piece of London Bird fine jewellery is customized (using a technique usually reserved for the manufacturing of micro-chips) to be light and easy to wear.
Miranda’s inspiration comes from physically handling different materials simultaneously to find combinations of texture and shape - resulting in tactile, 3D, designs. Her creative process is based on her visual memory, drawing from her fashion experience, and looking at the world’s details to find design in everything. London Bird’s collections are directly inspired from London’s iconic monuments, including, the Lloyd’s building, its urban elements, and even the Thames.
London Bird was started with a Prince's Trust award and was then selected as one of ten new British companies to take part in the prestigious ‘Crafted’ programme, both initiatives supported by HRH the Prince of Wales. Funded by American Express, Crafted has been developed by Walpole and Arts & Business to enable emerging craft businesses to connect to the British luxury industry, giving them a set of unique opportunities that will help them grow and develop their businesses. In 2010 London Bird gained support from the Centre for Fashion Enterprise and most recently was nominated for Jewellery Designer of the Year, during London Jewellery Week, 2011.
